Court Order for Car Title

My ex and I have been separated for awhile now, over a year. I want to file divorce in my state of residence to get this over with but my ex is holding a car title hostage. He refuses to sign it over. The vehicle is titled in a different state and currently titled in that state where it resides with a family member.

What I want to do is file the paperwork here in my state and have it decreed that the vehicle title will be reissued in my name only. I know he has it but the last communication with him he stated he won't sign the title to release it from his name.. I currently don't know where he is or how to contact him and am considering filing abadonment.

Is it possible to get a court order from one state to transfer a title in another state? I have an appointment with an attorney but have been rolling things around in my mind this morning and thought someone here might know.

Any suggestions would be helpful. The vehicle never was his, but he's holding the title which is co-signed with a family member hostage just to get back at me I think. I'll be so glad to get this over with.

Which family member? And who has possession of the vehicle? Is there still money owed on the vehicle?

If there's a joint loan, it'll require his signature to refinance the vehicle in your name only. If someone else's name is on the title, how about contacting THAT person and ask them to sign it?
