My stbx informed me that I will be liable for half of any gains from stocks we own. We are in the process of divorce and no financial settlement has been made yet. How am I liable when I don't actually have half the stocks yet?

So he has signed half of them over to you? If not, let him know that you will only be liable for the gain on your half of the stocks and will not pay it until you have actually received your half of the asset

Thanks, Goodmom. According to my accountant, I will in fact owe tax on half of the dividends. Gains would be if he sold any stocks, which he better not have done. Will find out soon enough..
