My husband has a base salary and bonuses. We plan to go to a mediator for our divorce. We have been married in Colorado for 15 years and have 4 kids and I have not worked. Do I negotiate for a set amount from his base monthly salary, and then a percentage of his bonuses for alimony? Or how does that work when his bonuses change in amounts every check? He can have a really good month or really bad month. We have always used his bonuses to help cover our monthly expenses, so the bonuses are not just extra savings, though if its a good year, there is extra. And what percentage would be fair? 40%? 50%? What is a typical percentage? Thnx

Typically, bonuses from the last few years are averaged into the base income, then child support is figured from there. Alimony is then based on what is left.
Regardless, there will now be 2 households with the same amount of money, which won't work....which means you will have to get a job.

I would add to MM's answer, that alimony should be based on what is left after CS, and the difference between that figure (his income after CS) and what your salary would be if you were working.

Actually, you have it reversed. Child support is based on what is left after ALIMONY. Alimony is tax free to the payor and taxed income to the payee, thus incomes for child support should not be considered until AFTER the alimony is figured.
Oh, and I will say that I think the OP's request for 40-50% of his pay is selfish and unrealistic.
