While I do understand that everyone is responsible for their own actions, by nature, I'm pretty close to a pacifist. Question when the wife fires on me with some pretty serious verbal assaults, and then (child like I know, but sometimes you just cant sit back) I fire back in like, should I initialize the apology? I mean, my logic, weak as it may be, is the situation would not have existed in the first place if she said nothing.

You need to stop responding to the **verbal assaults** By firing back at her, you're giving her what she wants.
Sitting back and not responding is a choice -- if someone isn't responding to what you're saying at some point, they stop saying it simply because it provokes no reaction.
Firing back also gives her more **ammunition** to use against you in a divorce proceeding -- you have no idea how that information could be interpreted -- she may decide to call YOU abusive and introduce that in a divorce proceeding.
