It's called a "341 meeting" or "meeting of creditors".
You will appear before a Judge and be sworn in. You will be asked your name, address, telephone number and social security number and if the information you supplied in the petition is true and correct to the best of your knowledge.
Depending on what you have filed and any additional information that was requested, the Judge may or may not have questions, may or may not request additional information if he/she has questions.
This is also the opportunity for any creditors to object to the discharge to ask you questions.
Creditors rarely show up...it has to be something major, like you just purchased a washer/dryer or some other expensive item on "credit" just prior to filing and they want it back.
Unless there are creditors present in your case or you are claiming a LOT of debt, a typical "341 meeting" takes around...15 minutes.

My hubby filed back in 1994. If I recall the 60 days for notification sounds about right.
Hubby and I married and bought a house. That was two years after the bankruptcy.

May I ask, did you file?
---> Yes, twenty years ago. But that is not where I got my knowledge of bankruptcy...I owned a business that did legal document prepartation for Pro Se litigants and we prepared a lot of bankruptcies. I also worked for an attorney who specialized in bankruptcies.
If so how long did you take to get a credit card or any credit estrablished?
---> 20 years ago, we were getting credit card offers BEFORE the BK was even finalized (discharged) and our "credit" was better after, than before...but then again, that was 20 years ago. Today...it varies. There will be a lot of places "eager" to grant you "credit" DISPITE the bankruptcy because they know you can't file again for 6 to 7 years, but they'll also charge you some higher interest rates for the "priviledge".
---> Don't be afraid to say "no"...shop around for interest rates. If they want your business, they will lower it a couple of notches. When you get a credit card...whatever the rate, make sure you aren't "locked" into the card and ONLY use it to establish new "history"...purchase items that can easily be PAID IN FULL EVERY MONTH and make SURE you pay it BEFORE the payment is due. I recommend purchasing a $10 or $20 item every month for a least a year...then after that time, ask the company for a review of your interest rate based on your "good" payment history. It might take you two years, but if they don't reduce it, then start shopping around for a new card and get rid of that one.
---> Also, don't apply for anything that you aren't sure you'll get. People don't realize that "inquiries" can count against your "score".
