FL Alimony.. A vent/question
      #229468 - 05/02/07 12:24 AM

My divorce was just settled.

4 Years. No Kids. Ex wife claims to be "physically" disabled*. She's not. We had proof she was/is not. She has a Bachelors in Keisiology/Sports Medicine. She is a NATA certified athletic trainer.

*she does collect SSI, but for "Severe Manic Depression, with Skitzophrenic Tendencies"

She got, all told, about $135K over 4.5 years.

$95K in alimony. 12 months at $1900/mo, and 42 months at $1500/mo
$40K in assets/bills paid.

In short, she got the house, new car, the entire TSP (think 401K)

She also got 10% of my retirement.

I got her lawyer bills, credit card bills ($15Kish) and a 9 year old pickup.

Right now, between Alimony and SSI, she has more money than me. It will stay that way, becasue when the alimony drops to $1500, my pay goes down by $400/mo (single versus married BAH)

How the hell was that FAIR. It's BETTER than what they judge wanted to give, but I don't think it's FAIR.

All 3 lawyers I talked to (my lawyer, and 2 others) all said that if you can get ANY settlement without permanent alimony, it would be better than what Judge Mathis is going to decree.

This is the problem... [Re: txks1151]

...with the whole entitlement society we live in. There is NO way a four year marriage should EVER get alimony.

Why give a "senior" discount, they have had plenty of time to raise the money...

there is just no sense in that.

I just don't see where it was figured that she was entitled to anything when she did not sacrifice anything for the marriage....and for her to come out ahead like this is just assinine.

what a waste of time.

Why did she get all of your TSP plus 10% of your retirement? That is not fair by any standard of law for property division.

It sounds like they agreed out of court. He got screwed by his own lawyer? No one should have agreed to that crap.

sounds like her side of the story must be quite different than yours.

I don't know how anyone can say that you got ripped off without knowing more.

To get SSI to give you benefits, you have to prove a pretty severe disability.

In addition, we don't know what she contributed to the marriage/assets. This poster certainly isn't going to say.

Susan, shut the flip up.

4 year marriage with no kids. She contributed little, and she has a college degree???

++++++++++++

LOL

so says this poster. But it kinda makes you wonder when you have THREE lawyers all telling him that he'd be lucky to get out of lifetime alimony??? Come on Miranda...even you can see when 1+1 isn't equaling 2.
