oT- Tent...Rebecca, need recipes!
      #417437 - 06/22/08 11:03 PM

Okay, I got my tent today.......... Hubby let me go out and do it on my own (he was playing in golf tourney).

SO... I picked this one!
http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2246150

He says he has all the cooking stuff (from boyscouts) so I assume he is right... he takes 10 boys out and cooks for them so 3 should be easy..... BUT I need some recipes/ideas Rebecca!

I also got the momma of all air matteress (thanks LeAnne). It's a coleman pillow top air mattress and it's huge!!

The place I picked has running water and electricity, which is good! We are going to do 2 days in DC, 2 days in Norfolk... rest tent camping....

I will start checking the weather later this week..... I just hope it's not hot as hell!!

Well....I do a HUGE breakfast every day (usually I cook one or two things, and then have fruit, yogurt, cheese, PB and all that nice high protein stuff), then we pack something for lunch because we're not at the campsite during the day, and then every 3 days or so we do a dinner. In the meantime, we either go into town to eat, potluck with neighbors, or meet up with friends/family.

I spend a lot of time at http://www.chuckwagondiner.com/index.html before we go, just to poke around for ideas. There are a TON of great things to remember there.

Some tips: Always have paper towels, dish soap, heavy duty foil, cooking spray, containers for carrying water, trash bags and some basic cooking things: one skillet, one sauce pan, spatula, sharp knife, large spoon (or 2), spices, etc. You can wrap your silverware in a paper towel tube. Keeps them contained, and the sharps out of immediate touch. The best way to get the stuff CLEAN is to boil them in a little soapy water and then scrub. The kids can carry them over to rinse, once they cool off a little. We do take plastic cups and silverware, but reuse them for a day or two. One less thing to have to carry home.

The kids do all of the water carrying and kindling hunting. They LOVE it...lol.

So here's a couple of fun things we REALLY like:

http://www.chuckwagondiner.com/recipes.php?id=54&cat_id=12 (Campfire Muffins)

http://www.chuckwagondiner.com/recipes.php?id=1415&cat_id=12 (Breakfast Nests)

http://www.chuckwagondiner.com/recipes.php?id=49&cat_id=10 (Cinnamon-Sugar Biscuit Sticks)

http://www.chuckwagondiner.com/recipes.php?id=314&cat_id=10 (Ziploc Ice Cream)

http://www.chuckwagondiner.com/recipes.php?id=155&cat_id=11 (Walking Tacos - although we use Fritos, because we like them better than Doritos.)

Jeesh...there's a lot more (sweet bananas! baked campfire apples!), but I'm sure you'll find stuff that suits your family.

Then, of course.....we do steaks and baked potatoes (wrap in foil and sit around the coals for 90 minutes or so, while everyone cleans up and gets ready to cook the other stuff), fish and rice, fresh veggies in a foil packet, corn on the cob, kabobs, etc.

It really takes some prep work, but it makes things SO much easier to pack/unpack and prepare.....taking a lot of time and stress out of the actual trip. I think I invest a MINT in Ziploc every summer. I measure the dry goods like pancake mix, sugar, and flour into baggies at home, and then label them with a Sharpie. I get a LOT more into the totes we pack food in (seal with bungee cords and stuff under the picnic table seat so the critters can't get in), and don't bring home half-eaten boxes that are usually damp and dirty. Bleh.

And for camping trips? Our nutritional value probably goes in the toilet. We do lots of powdered drinks (Tang, Ovaltine, Kool-Aid) and snacks (chips, chewy granola bars, pudding cups, Pop Tarts) . I figure...who cares? It's only a few weeks a year.

Oh. One helpful tip. Put a large tarp under your tent. It keeps any water out of your tent from the ground-up...and the debris out of the bag you pack the tent in. it's just easier.

I do like the tent you picked, but the rain-fly sucks, and the copious windows will leak like faucets. If it rains, you and all your stuff will be soaked.

Ours is more like this one:

http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1419298

The we hang-up tarps over the ends (hence the ton of rope we pack), just in case. Rain + tent camping = not a good time for anyone, unless you're prepared. You can also do things like dig a little trench through your camp....so if it does rain, the rain will flow the way you want....rather than into your stuff.

Thanks!! Hubby has a thing that will go over the tent.... (can't think of it right now).... it's like 8 feet tall, four poles.....Canopy... thati's it.... he will put the tarp down, he knows to do that from being an Eagle Scout and he always digs a trench.. one around the tent area and one around the fire pit. He does that in our back yard.....LOL

Thanks for the website.... I am going to start looking at it.... hubby was busy with golf this entire weekend (tourney) so I am going to nail him down today to start telling me what all we "do" have.

I got DS a portable fan/light that takes batteries. If it's going to be 'hot as hell' you might want to look into something like that :)
