representing myself

my lawyer accepted my case with my husband paying for my legal fees. then suddenly my husband refused to pay the fees and now charging me with a lot of fees owed. now i need to represent myself. could my lawyer not give me all my papers without getting paid? is this legal and appropraite? thanks.
