alimony + deductions

according to this IRS doc, [censored]://[censored].irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p504.pdf

so i paid ex-wife $10k as a one-time lump sum payment. does this count as alimony? it wasn't in a legally-binding marital separation agreement.

according to turbo tax, if i paid her, it is deductible on my taxes and it asks me to put down her SSN# and it will be taxable to her.

is this correct? or is this 10k not count as 'alimony'?

I believe that if it wasn't ordered to be paid as alimony, it is not deductible.....similar to the fact that if you pay **child support** without it being ordered, it's a gift not child support.

No, it doesn't sound like alimony. It sounds like just a settlement. The divorce decree has to specifically define the payment as alimony in order for you to deduct it.
