My Husband has been divorced from Ex-Wife for over a year. We received a collection notice from a company representing AT&T for $500 on the house phone they had together. This is the first we have heard anything about this. Apparently she gave them his name and number. She disconnected that phone when they were divorced and got a new number. Before they were divorced, they split the bills 50/50 per temp. order until divorce was final. He never knew this bill was sitting out there. I would really love to stick it to her and make her pay for it. We can't afford it and this is on his credit now.

It's unfortunate that this is a cruel lesson to take your name off EVERYTHING when you leave a residence.
You may be able to demonstrate to AT&T that the bill was incurred far enough AFTER the divorce that it was solely her bill -- but if she doesn't pay it, then he's stuck paying it.
I would however, ask them to remove it from his credit on the basis that he didn't KNOW about it -- I understand that you can't afford it and perhaps AT&T will make a payment arrangement for it.
