(Reuters) - The Ohio House of Representatives on Tuesday voted to ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detectable, which can be as early as six weeks.
The House voted 54 to 43 for the ban, along party lines, with most Republicans voting in favor.
If enacted, the law would be a challenge to the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling which upheld a woman's right to an abortion until the fetus is viable outside the womb, usually at 22-24 weeks.
Republican Ohio House Speaker William Batchelder said he knows this bill will face a court challenge.
"We're writing bills for courts," he said.
The bill now goes to the Republican-dominated Ohio Senate.
The Ohio House also passed two other abortion restrictions Tuesday, one that would ban late-term abortions after 20 weeks if a doctor determines that the fetus is viable outside the womb. Another bill excludes abortion coverage from the state insurance exchange created by the federal health care law.
The late-term ban already was passed by the Ohio Senate.
Neither bill was as contentious as the heartbeat legislation, which does not contain exceptions for rape, incest or the life or health of the mother.
Republican Representative Danny Bubp said the bill is the will of the voters. He noted that Republicans, who tend to favor anti-abortion laws, became the majority in the state house last November.
"We have to reflect on what Ohio did on November 2nd of last year," said Bubp. "And that is they voted. And they voted for change. Today, we have three pro-life bills on the floor and I'm happy about that."
Democrats in the Ohio House said the heartbeat bill goes too far.
"This bill gives the government the ultimate power, the ultimate power to intrude upon the most personal and intimate decisions of our lives, of women's lives, frankly," said Rep. Connie Pillich.
Ohio Right to Life also has expressed concerns about the heartbeat bill. The organization said the bill is unconstitutional and believes it is not wise to spend hundreds of thousands of taxpayer's dollars defending it.

What about the life of the child? Maybe this bill goes to far legally, I don't know... personally, I don't think it is. The first prenatal appointment dd had here, listening to the baby's heartbeat... that was life, there was no doubt that she had another life inside her. Her first ultrasound here was when she still had the legal option to abort, the baby definitely was not viable outside the womb... but we were looking at a baby, there was no question about it... technology has improved since I had my kids and the details were simply amazing... definitely life, definitely a baby... it makes me sad to think that she still had the legal option to destroy that life. Maybe as technology continues to advance, we will recognize more and more that these blobs of cells are indeed life.

Funny thing is, these "pro womens" group also fight in FAVOR of laws that bar a woman from CHARGING for "the most personal and intimate decisions of our lives"...ie prostitution.

They are a PART of ANOTHER life that is only sustained BY that other life! It is NOT it's own, independent entity.
If you would like, I can send you pictures of what a fetus at 29 weeks looks like. Actually, sorry, make that 32 weeks. OUTSIDE the womb. I remember at 29 weeks, when she was born, my FIRST thought was how UNbabylike she looked like. She looked like an alien baby. That was my EXACT thought. She looked like a baby ET.
A "baby" at a first ultrasound (which you could be talking what? Vag US at what? 7 weeks? 8 weeks?) is NOT a "baby".

------------->> I wouldn't fight AGAINST that. I absolutely believe that prostitution shouldn't be illegal either. Service rendered :) it's fine for a woman to use her HANDS for pleasure, ie: massage, but you can't sell s-e-x? Why not? Hugh sells it in Playboy. Puritanical nonsense. Legalize prostitution too.

I am just not OK with the government deciding what I can and cannot do with my body, even if the choice is to end a life growing inside me (I could never end a life growing inside me, and I say that as a hypothetical answer as I've never had to make that choice). I just don't think that is a job for the government.

Yeah, that's where it gets tricky for me... I know what I believe, how I feel, what I know is and isn't right... but do I have the right to impose my view on others, to dictate that what is right for me and my child is right for them and theirs... I want to say "yes" badly, because it is precious life in my eyes... but I don't think it's the right answer.

So I take it you are in favor of legalizing drugs and against the seatbelt laws, right?
