OT - Beagles
      #779421 - 03/09/12 02:53 PM

After losing one of our dogs (rottie/lab mix) new years day, we are discussing what we would like to get if anything.

I want something smallish that my girls (6, 4, and 4) can play with and help care for and just in general cuddle up with. And doesn't shed pounds of hair daily. My rottie is beloved, but a "bull in a china shop" and knows it. So he doesn't play with them. I won't consider another rottie, because they are now banned in military housing and I wouldn't have gotten them in the first place if I had a crystal ball and knew they would do that when my dogs were 5 and 6 yo.

We still have our male rottie (10 yo).

I DO NOT WANT A PUPPY! I deal with enough bodily functions with my children thankyouverymuch.

So after some investigation I am considering a female adult beagle. I have found a few at local pounds. But I was wondering if anyone else has experience with them? There is one that looks really promising, but is on the old side (11). But maybe with Joey being a senior citizen a better match?

I don't think i would mind the barking. I really miss it. Every time the door bell rings (or a car door slams...) my mind still mentally waits for the barking until I remember she is gone. My male never barks. Even the UPS guy can deliver things in silence. He just stands on the landing and gives warning glares when he hears things. Not that I am wanting an incessant barker, but I don't think barking would bother me. Gives DH enough time to lock n load. :)

We have Ditzie the Beagle. She goes to work everyday with us and sits behind me in the office chair. She just turned 2 and was a rescue pup at 3 months. The customer's love her and she is just a sweet pea. I let her out in the lobby when the kids want to play, never a problem. She likes playing tag with them, quite funny to watch. She will play catch with the ball too. She has only raised her hair to one customer, but hey I don't like him either. She will love, kiss and loves to snuggle, she just loves kids. She follows us everywhere. Say Bye Bye and she is up and ready to go for a ride.

She doesn't chase rabbit's but digs moles and kills them. Barking... the only time she barks, is when she hear's a car in the drive at home...which I like. Now if she is sitting in a chair at the kitchen table and see's a Deer in the field she will Baroooooo, but other than that she is not a Barker at all.
Now she does shed and Beagle's do shed, but Ditzie's hair is really short, maybe a 1/2 inch long.

I have had Lab's and Collie's and I just like the small dog for in the house. I don't have to worry about her snatching something off the counter because she is too short.

Just LOVE a BEAGLE, and I have a bumper sticker too. Teehee

We have Bailey the Beagle. Bailey is a real pain and is an incessant barker. I love her, but I really wish I had been more careful selecting a pet. I went with the "I always wanted a beagle named Bailey" so I got it. Had I waited I would have a house full of wiener dogs. I LOVE WIENER DOGS (ask LeAnne)!

I think a really good family dog would be an Australian Shepherd. SMART, attentive, good with family of all ages, it was our #2 pick had we not purchased my sweet baby (wiener dog).

Definitely agree an adult dog that is good with other dogs would be a good pick for a senior dog. Puppies just are crazy.

Beagles have the most annoying bark. Our neighbors have one that barks 24/7...not just a regular bark. It barks like it is being sexually assualted or beaten or something. It is horrific sounding.

I've heard Beagles are barkers. Not just "I'm telling you someone is here" barkers but moaning and baying barkers. Of course every dog has their own personality so you can't just judge by the breed. If you have info on the one at the shelter they can probably tell you a little about her behavior and demeanor.

My family will probably kill me but if I get a dog I want a standard poodle. They are just so incredibly smart and one of my kids is allergic to dogs. Poodle equals no fur so no allergies. :o)

They don't have cute bark..it's an annoying bark like a coon dog ..howling..and they will do it day and night..its so annoying..that as a neighbor..I'd probably have to turn you in..cause I sure wouldnt want to hear it ... :) ...and you need to let them run loose in the woods because they are bred to be hunting dogs..they are not happy if they cant hunt..wouldnt be fair to the dog if you're not going to let them loose in the woods at least once a week..we use to take ours out when we went to the country fishing..she loved it..you would hear her howling all afternoon in the woods..she was so happy in her element..

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. 10-12 pounds. Barks when someones comes to the door. Bread to be companion dogs. Love to snuggle. Plays with the kids, but not aggressive at all.

Ours allows the kids to dress her up, listen to her heartbeat with the doctor kit, put her in a doll stroller, and sleeps at my son's feet at night.

ETA: Ours was an adult female free to a good home in the newspaper. THey were having a baby and didn't want the responsibility.

She looks like a mini Cocker Spaniel that has been mixed with a pug.

Beagles bay. At least the one we had as kids did. Neighbors complained.
