Did your husband perhaps change since you married? In very few good marriages do the parties not both change to some extent when making compromises to share a life together peacefully. Even if the changes are truly for the GOOD, I think people assume the spouse is controlling the other spouse and THAT is why they may think, act or feel differently then say 10 years ago. Not to mention people naturally mature and change.
My MIL thinks I control my DH. And my friends think he controls me. LOL We can't win. In truth, neither me or my husband feel the list bit controlled but our friends, family, etc would not agree. We've both changed since we met and I really believe my compromises are good ones and make me a better person and the same for him. But for some, change is BAD BAD BAD no matter what.
There are lots of other explanations....
Maybe she is a control freak with her husband (if she has one) or in the past when she did and assumes it is that way all around for everyone.
Or perhaps she harbors some of those typical MIL worries that you were going to steal her son and is just so damn relieved you DIDN'T that she couldn't contain it! LOL
My husband would be better suited to answer this post! LOL He gets all riled up about things like that.
