The way you said this brought to mind a good counterpoint on this long-standing argument. WOULD an employer continue giving you a check? Well, my mom spent over 30 years with a company, and she gets a check from them every month even though she works elsewhere for the last year or two now. It's called a pension. That's the alimony/retirement for SAHP debate in a nutshell. A company pays you the entire time you're there, but they also pay you after you live if you've been there long enough. So should a long-term marriage be treated any differently?
---> Ahhhhhhhhhh...nothing like a nice intellectual debate; I'll see your counterpoint and raise you another.
---> Just as an employee receives a paycheck, a SAHP is also receiving one in the form that they have a roof over their head, food in their stomach, clothes on their back at the minimum. It can also be assumed that they have discretionary money, they are provided with/participate in activities, vacations, etc. As the WP receives raises, the SAHP also receives "raises" in the form of higher SOL, more discretionary money, more activities, more/better vacations, etc.
---> And then "employment" ends. In the "real world"...an employee might be offered compensation in lieu of "notice" or as you noted, they receive a pension. For a SAHP...this same compensation is called "alimony"...depending on the "length of service" and "contribution"...this may be for a specific length of time or indefinate. Additional, the SAHP is eligible to receive part of the "retirement" in the form of a lump sum distribution of marital assets aka equitable distribution.
