Notifying C/O prior to filing???Seperate or divorc

I have a question, I am a non military spouse divorcing my Marine husband. I was told by a helpful friend that I need to notify my stbx c/o prior to filing my paperwork. Does anybody know if this is true? I cannot find out who to contact and cannot get many answers.
My stbx has suggested that we file for legal seperation and not for divorce right now, he will be going to Irag in July and thinks it is better for ME to not do this. We have one child, and I am trying to do what is best for my little boy. Anyone have any advice? I have no desire to go back to him and will not go back to live with him under any circumstances.
