You don't need to notify anyone. Divorce, separation, etc. is a civil matter. You know your situation better than anyone. Based only on what you have posted I would go for the separation. A separation works just like a divorce but leaves you married. I settles support, division of assets and debts and child custody. It also allows you the same militay benefits of a spouse and you can file taxes jointly.
