Divorces that aren't contested, or that don't have child custody or property issues to resolve, can occur relatively quick. In SC for example, after one year of separation, and barring other unresolved issues, you can file and be done in 90 days.

The longer ones you hear of are where the parties involved can't agree on terms. Whether its custody, cs, property settlements, spousal support, etc. If the parties are entrenched in their positions and unwilling to compromise, or one party is out for revenge, the time span to have *everything* finalized can last years.

Not to mention 100s of thousands of dollars. I believe there is one poster on this board that spent upwards of 200k-300k on their divorce and is STILL not done.

There are instances where the parties agree to finalize ending the marital relationship while still working out the financial aspects. I believe that is called bifurcation.

If you are looking for a hard and fast timeline for your situation, I'm afraid there isn't one, as you and your stbx seem to be far apart on settling. Perhaps someone from your home state can post your states guidelines, but even that can vary by county given the judges available and their caseloads. Your attorney should be the person who knows your local timeline best.

The worst thing you could do cache, is to settle for something that will hurt you and your children(?), because you want to get it over with post haste. The desire to be done is totally understandable - BTDT - but it also puts you at a disadvantage. Its similar to buying a car you absolutely love, and letting the salesperson know how badly you want it. Your negotiations take a heck of a lot longer if the other party knows you just want it over with fast.
