My favorite Agreement from Ruiz's book is "Don't take anything personally" because then you let others define your mood and/or who you are and whether you're happy or not.
Whatever a person says or does is due to their own story, their own problems or issues, or mood. If they are happy, they'll be nice to everyone; if they are not, they'll be miserable to be around or spout out hurtful or mean things.
Way too often we think it's all about us, when it's not. To be able to NOT take things personally is not easy and takes alot of work to break the habit. But once you can, life becomes much more serene...
I wish everyone would read The Four Agreements and really work hard at adhering to them. The book has made a huge difference in my life along with Cheryl Richardson's 'The Unmistakable Touch of Grace'. Her book talks about how everything happens for a reason and that we need to be aware of this, to take advantage of what we need to learn in order to be happy.
Anyway, regarding what the guy at the bar said to you CiCi; don't take it personal! Hard to do I know, especially if you feel he hit the nail on the head. But there's nothing wrong with feeling sad after all you've gone through and maybe he was just being kind and compassionate and there's nothing wrong with that...
