I have alerted my attorney concerning the problem with her employer-sponsored insurance. The insurer denied the claims because they were not precertified, and the coverage was terminated 3 days after I was hospitalized; the hospital claimed they tried to precertify the claim, but was told that the insurance was cancelled. My wife in an email last week claimed that she was still covering me, but refused to try to straighten any thing out. (That was her last communication.)

I have to reapply for VA benefits, 100 miles away (I have $6 in funds). It requires more than one trip. Current wait time to even get a hearing is 177 days. If they deny my claim (which they did twice in the early 1990's, before finally approving the third try,) the wait time for an appeal hearing is 628 days. It is very much a one-sided process. I am not allowed to be present at either hearing, nor am I allowed to hire an attorney to represent me in the process. The current administration even tried to pass a regulation a few years back that forbade VA personnel from assisting in the application process. I think that public outcry squelched that regulation, but I don't know that for sure.

I gave up on using the VA in the late 90's, because they imposed all kinds of fees on households earning more than $17,000 (we made about $60,000 at the time), even for service-connected disabilities like mine, and it was taking 6 months to even get an appointment. When I need medical attention, I can't wait 6 months -- I need it at that time.

Every single male in my family was career military going all the way back to the 1700's; my son (he could have easily been admitted to West Point) refused to join, even though he wanted to follow in my footsteps, because he saw how I was mistreated by the VA after my discharge.

I have been flat out turned down for any assistance by 3 churches here; a fourth didn't want me to attend, and a fifth (HER church) actually encouraged my wife in her divorce of me. It's a small county, and everybody knows that my wife has alleged abuse. Only two people are even talking with me (besides my doctor and caseworker), and they bring fresh vegetables from time to time. I attended a different church in Maryville, 45 miles away, last Sunday. I liked what I saw, and as gas permits, will try to keep attending. I am way too isolated here.

Trust me on this -- the vaunted strong morals of the midwest are absent in this county. Last year, several elders of the biggest church in the county, who also happen to be very wealthy, announced that they were going to put 17 - 20 confined animal feed operations (CAFO's) in the county to "try an reverse" the job loss here. The first one is planned for 1-1/4 mile to the north of me, with 100,000 pigs on two acres. Property values within 5 miles of the site went almost to zero just on the announcement, (it is one reason why we have negative equity.) A few of us tried to fight it, but the bulk of the population is on the other side of the county, and they could care less about the property devaluation, smell, and health risks that these CAFO's pose. We lost the fight after shelling out several thousand dollars of borrowed money. I left that church, as well, since they forbade the pastor (who was against the CAFOs) from even speaking out against it. He and his family have a lot of medical problems, and he needed that job, so he muzzled himself.

That's when my wife and I put our farm on the market, without a single inquiry, let alone buyer. We looked into hiring an attorney to try to get our property loss out of the CAFO owners, but only one agreed to help -- at $1,000/hr (plus expenses). A man living across the border in Iowa has been fighting in court the CAFO only 1/2 mile from his home, and has been basically bankrupted by 13 years of litigation; this despite several manure spills and environmental contamination.

I realize that all midwesterners aren't like this, but I grew to be absolutely disgusted at the selfish, immoral behaviors displayed in this county. The CAFOs will only pay $6/hr, and statistics show that nearly half will develop respiratory diseases. The only people that are willing to work them are illegals, which are beginning to flood the area.

So, we tried to bail out, and failed. At one point, I suggested that we just walk away, turning everything back to the mortgager, but my wife was unwilling to take the "hit" on our credit rating. Seems to me like this divorce will do the very thing she wanted to avoid!

I write too much, and apologize for it. I have nobody to talk to here.
