"Now, we know there are plenty of women that got left out in the cold with nothing. "
Trust me, I don't get the alimony logic myself. I was married for almost 9 yrs, taking off roughly 9 months when dd14 was born (as we had previously agreed on), and less than 1 month after ds was born (I had to, he left and took any cash we had with him). In the discussion with my lawyer, I was told to not even bother asking for alimony, as my state wasn't a pro-alimony state. No big issue, I guess, as I had found a job, childcare, etc. before ever finding a lawyer.
Yet, when ex married wife#2, they were married roughly 1 yr when she accused him of dv, and the cops actually arrested him and gave her a protection order (I am against dv, had some previous dv issues with my ex, but trust me, to call what happened in that trailer "dv" is an insult to any dv survivor), and the judge signed off on ALIMONY for her ($100 a month, he was pretty low income and was paying cs for 3 kids with 2 different moms), since she was a SAHM for HER 3 kids (from previous relationships, none with him, and she was receiving more cs for EACH of her 3 than I received for our TWO, in addition to all the welfare she could possibly qualify for). ds was less than a yr old at the time of our divorce, her youngest was a pre-schooler (or would have been, had she bothered to take him), the other two were in school.
The "dv" my ex was arrested for, co'ed to attend anger management classes, and earned himself a tro for? Her and her sister took ex's vehicle (only vehicle in the household)the evening before and drained the tank to the point where ex HAD to stop to fuel before being able to even make it to work. He had planned on the gas lasting until his pay day, which it easily would have has his wife not been out joyriding for hrs the night before. Bottomline, he had no gas and no gas money. She did have cs money for her kids, and when he asked her for 5 bucks to put gas in, she told him "f u", and that cs was HERS to spend as she saw fit (or unfit), while any expense related to her kids was his responsibility. She was laying on the couch holding her purse. He attempted to take her purse to get gas money out of it, she held on tight, and slid off the couch. Since it was an older couch, the padding was worn down, and while she slid off, she got a scratch on her back from the padding-less arm rest. She called 911, he was arrested for dv, with the consequences already mentioned. When he told me this, I said there is NOT way this happened this way, you would have not gotten arrested for that. He showed me the police report...written up with the exact same story he had told me, and I have repeated here, but told to the cops by her. She 100% collaborated the above story in the police report...
