Hi Drew,
I agree with most of what you wrote :). However I take exception to your sentiment about ambition. There's nothing wrong with people who want to excel, create, enjoy challenges, and to help others. Yes, ambition can be selfish but I think most of us make decisions that will benefit us in one way or another. If we didn't, we wouldn't be human!
Have you ever read Ayn Rand's The Virtue of Selfishness? Or her other books, Atlas Shrugged, or The Fountainhead? Great books which talk about ambition, drive, and how selfishness can be a virtue since often what we do for ourselves, benefits others.
Take Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft. He took drive and ambition to new levels and by doing so has shared his genius with the world and we have benefitted greatly. Now, with all of his wealth, he is giving back through his foundation and helps millions of people all over the world. So yes, ambition is selfish but that very selfishness often benefits others.
Bottom line, is that I get tired of people bashing those who are ambitious and successful and make it all sound so awful. Nothing wrong with wanting to be the best and do well. Nothing at all...
I'll get off my soapbox now :).
Melanie
