He does NOT dig a bigger hole for himself, because typically in NYS spousal support is not for life. However, SHE will be in greater financial need because of the decreased SSI. If the SSI is discontinued/suspended for 12 consecutive months, she will have to go through the entire application process.
If she already receives SSI, she is mandated to report any other forms of income she receives. If she doesn't, then she runs the risk of getting an SSI overpayment which she has to repay. I told my ex to check out the Social Security website if she didn't believe me about the reduction. Hopefully it will cause your BF's ex to reconsider which is of greater value. Your BF could always report to Social Security himself if he is ordered to pay spousal support to his ex.
