Preemiemom, as one poster put it is on the honor system until one gets audited. The reason why I know this is I do tax auditing for a living but the job I do is for a different type of tax (business & occupation tax). As we always advise taxpayers when they ask if documentation is needed for filing, we tell them no however keep it so if we send a notification you are being audited you can prove the numbers.

Anyways the point I'm going to is that I have friends/co-workers that do federal tax preparation every year for others. I don't do tax returns for others however I do plenty of research and also rely plenty on my friends that do that type of work. I know the following information to be true because I'm living the divorce nightmare and have researched the following. Basically if you file other then what you are on 12/31/yy you could be taking deductions one isn't eligbile for. For example if you file married but separate either both parties take a standard deduction or one takes the itemized deductions and the other party gets no deduction (even standard) per IRS guidelines. However if you file single, but should be filing as married but separate, you would be "authorized" things that aren't allowed as married but separate. If you were still married at the end of 12/31/07 for example, it may be best to file jointly however run the numbers.
