Can't think of a single instance where asking a kid to say please or thank you applies -- unless it is an English grammar lesson. I say, "Pass up your papers, please." I say "Thank you." I say, "Please stop that behavior or you'll be on detention." ONCE.
No, I don't think my responsibility is to teach your kids their manners, not to talk with food in their mouths, how to hold a fork, when to write a thank you note, anything having to do with morality or sex, how to make it to class on time, etc.
Sorry, but the idea that parents can hold a teacher responsible for teaching social graces to their children doesn't come under the headings of reading, writing, arithmetic, history, geography, band, art... THAT job is the parents'. There aren't enough hours in the day for us teachers as it is.
