Going through alot of this myself right now and have the following advice:

- Read up on the FCRA and FDCPA acts. This outlines what the original creditor, the collection agency and the credit reporting agencies are required to do to comply with the law.
- Never dispute over the phone. Put it in writing and use CMRRR to cover yourself. Too many times junk debt buyers like Asset or ICS have been caught outright lying in order to get $$.
- If you have to deal with a collector on the phone be aware what they can say and what they can't, and who they can say it to. They can't tell your next door neighbor you're going to debtors prison if you don't pay your $20 Blockbuster bill.
- Ask for validation on anything that is with a collection agency. Doing this will help you determine that they have the authority to collect the debt and that they have accurate paperwork on it. Its not a fun feeling to pay a CA only to find out the $ they want are inflated, and they already sold the debt to someone else.
- Find out your states Statute of Limitations on debts. A debt can stay on your report for 7yrs, BK 10, but after SOL runs out it becomes very difficult for you to be successfully sued for a debt.
- Medical collections are governed by HIPPA. Anyone collecting on med bills still has to adhere to your right to privacy as outlined by HIPPA.

PM -- did FICO08 actually make it thru? I've not kept up on that one, but I thought EQ was still fighting it.
