"We had a lot of bad press here a few years back...the city had voted to allow insurance benefits for same-sex partners. I think it is an excellent idea, however, the way they did it was discriminatory. SO and I are not legally married, and I could not have gotten benefits because he is a man and I am a woman, but had we been the SAME gender, we could have. Basically, it was determined they should either allow one otherwise unqualified adult per household or none, and couldn't exclude everyone who wasn't gay. I agree with the decision, it was unfair to those who were in heterosexual long term relationships, those with adult children at home, etc. "
My insurance allows "domestic partners" of any sex to insure one another w/ proof of residency.
