I work for a small family owned company. 3rd generation is currently in control. E-mail is a great tool for convenience but should not be used for such conversations.

My door is always open. I have a turn over rate of less than 1/2 of 1%. My staff voices "concerns" daily.

For example in our company - we had tough times about 18 months ago. Our owners almost lost their homes and we almost had to close our doors permanently. Our employees NEVER knew. It was stressfull times for some of us but everyone else had an enjoyable holiday season. Bonuses were a bit slim that Spring. Had anyone snipped at me about the size of their payroll when they didn't know the circumstances that had transpired - and just how fortunate they were to even have a job left - they would have been in for a rude awakening.
