He should have at minimum spoke to the boss by telephone. I doubt he will be fired for it. Not sure of his exact performance but replacing talented employees can be quite expensive. Probably just a chew his butt in a professional way meeting for his lack of tact.

I do not like the At Will Employment laws. It's nothing more that a practice employers use to fire who they want, when they want, for no good reason, so long as they are not breaking any labor laws.
