In most states, the child cannot determine where he/she will reside. It would require a court order and the issue is ultimately decided based on the standard in that state. In most states, it is a best interests of the child standard. However, in some states, it it mush higher. In Minnesota, for example, it would require a showing of endangerment. In the end, the child's opinion is just one of many factors a court would consider.

I would suggest negotiating a schedule that allows increased time to see how it works.
