There are those that would argue because SOME victims of abuse seem to enjoy the victim role and actually engage the aggressor, that ALL victims do that. There are books, websites, and "experts" out there who claim that.....blame the victim.

There are also books and "experts" (like many of Evans books) that find abuse in every situation that involves the slightest critique or episode that does not go the victim's way.

Your question, "Personal experience vs. studying the topic - can reading/studying truly give the reader a clear picture of the effects of abuse? Why or why not? " has a clear answer, although I am afraid it is not the one that you are looking for. To get a CLEAR picture of the effects of abuse, one must objectively study (say at the doctoral level and then work in the field) Anyone who has experienced abuse has subjective feelings on the subject and would be hard pressed to develop a clear, objective analysis of the effects.

If you change the question to "Who can understand the exact fear and desperation of a victim ?" That would be someone else who has lived through it.
