So, you've told him that you want a divorce. What is your next step?

If you are serious about the divorce, you should make appointments with attorneys. Most offer a free consultation. An attorney can provide advice as to how to go about the process. Let them know about the abuse! I would be concerned that serving him with papers, while living together could be disastrous! With his history of abuse, it would be best to protect yourself!

Be very thankful that you haven't mixed finances! I lost all of my savings and equity from the sale of my home in my short marriage!

You purchased the home in your name only, and he did not contribute to the down payment or closing costs, so the house should be simple. I believe the only thing he would be able to gain is 1/2 of the appreciation/equity that has accumulated during the time of the marriage. In this real estate market, it's probably nothing.

I would not mention the divorce to your husband again. If he's in denial and acting like the conversation didn't occur, than don't bring it up again. He may go off the deep end!

This divorce should be very simple. The most important thing is your safety! Talk to an attorney right away!
