Seperation questions....

How does separation work? Is it easier than divorce? Whats the process of separation? I'm trying to decide whether to just do a straight out divorce or do a separation with divorce later down the line. How soon does being legally separated happen? Does he have to sign or do anything to make it official or can I send it in to courts and it just happens...?
