If no one authorizes it, then why wasn't I fired for having personal pics of a bathroom remodel a year prior... which I shared with the same boss who fired me?
Get real, Gr8dad. Employees have personal stuff on their company laptops left, right and sideways. An employee's personal business is of no concern of the employer unless it interferes with the individual's ability to do his/her job. That's what CIVIL RIGHTS are about - not discriminating based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religious background, etc. It's a FREE COUNTRY, and if you haven't checked lately, adultery is NOT against the law - at least not in my state.
Security nightmare, that's what programs like the keylogging software are marketed as being INTENDED to do (MONITOR EMPLOYEES AND/OR MINOR CHILDREN) - not to stalk estranged spouses. It was specifically stated as such in their licensing agreement - that one must OWN the computer upon which they were installing the software. That's CLEARLY not the case here. I did not own it. I had what is called "effective consent". I'd suggest some research in the area of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act.
Furthermore, IT organizations, such as it is in my husband's company - they flat out BLOCK certain websites and programs.
As an IT professional, in a pre-sales engineer capacity, I had full admin rights to my laptop to install, reinstall, and configure demo software however needed to present to a customer. The same email and chat programs used to conduct the affair that you are so adamant about making it the cause of my termination - well, they integrated with the tool my company was selling. Kinda hard to sell a customer on all the features of a product if the supplemental add-ins are NOT there to prove the concept.
Exercise a little restraint when it comes to expertise. Being an "IT professional" does not make one an expert in every role ever played.... in fact, those who are in sales who encounter people like you often refer to you as "the sales prevention" department. And oh, how easy it is to forget those salespeople provide a very valid function - like ensuring you get a paycheck.
