Alimony while I am in school

Hello everyone! I am married for almost 13 years and we have 2 children - 11 and 6. I came from overseas to GA 2 years ago (military). Before we moved here I was a nail technician with a little income, but basically I took care of our children and household. After we came here I have tried to find a job in my profession (legal assistant) with no luck. 1/2 year ago I decided to go to college to get on my feet here in the States. In the meantime my husband and I decided to get divorced (the kids will stay with me), but now he is telling me that I have to find a full-time job because he doesn't have to pay much alimony. He earns $4750 net and all I was asking for was that he supports me (and the kids of course) until I am finished with college (another 3-3.5 years). He talked to his lawyer and he told him that if he has to pay alimony in a contested divorce it wouldn't be much, so we should find an agreement. So I am not sure if he is trying to scare me to avoid a contested divorce or if he is right. I would appreciate your opinion....
