How divorce affects young children

I'm new to this site but I would like some input on things regarding children and divorce. My husband and I have been separated for about 10 months, and within the last month and a half I have decided that I want a divorce. He is extremely worried about the effect the divorce will have on our 2 kids, ages 2 and 3. Him and I have been unhappy for years, so my question is, is it better to stay together and be unhappy for the sake of the kids, or is it better to move on and find someone who makes each of us happy? Will the kids be better off with 2 step parents who love them, and make me and my husband happy, or will they be better off with their biological parents being together despite being miserable? Thanks in advance.
