Son is still seeing dad, just not spending overnights. I guess dad has to start talking to son to see what is going on. That's what parents typically do when they want to know what is going on with their teenagers. Open communication.

At this stage, if dad is focusing on overnights and forces it on son, son is going to probably withdraw and not want to talk to dad. In 4 months, dad won't have any legal document tying him to this child. So, he needs to spend the next 4 months wisely. Otherwise, son isn't going to want to see dad, at all. So, who "wins" in that situation??

If son doesn't talk, dad should try to enjoy the time he does have with son instead of pushing the kid for more time. If dad backs down a bit, maybe the kid will come around on his own. Better to go this route then have the kid turn 18 and he doesn't want anything to do with dad.

Kids often need their parents more then they think once they are 18 and beyond. Yet, they aren't worldly enough to realize it. So, by 17, parents might need to spend more time giving a child some space so they child will reach out to a parent when there is no custody order guiding the relationship.
