Debt division and a stay-at-home mom
      09/11/11 10:25 AM

I have been married 15 years. I am a mother of 2 (8 and 9).I stayed home with them for the majority of the time, working PT the last few years since they started Elementary School. We are trying to divorce as inexpensively and fairly as possible (amicable). Being part of the housing crash, we ended up with a large sum of debt ($1,200.00/mo.) and are in a debt reduction program to pay off what we owe. We have 3 more years of payments. We have been non legally separated for a year and he has been paying me fair child/spousal support. I continue to work PT while vigorously searching for a FT job that will allow us to keep a predictable and consistent schedule for the kids. However, even with child support/alimony/PT pay, I am barely getting by because I am paying half the debt. I have done everything I can to cut down expenses, low rent 2BR apt, cancelled cable, NO spending money/new clothes for myself, bargain shopping for necessities and generally struggling on every level. If something comes up like a car repair, dentist, or even Christmas or school clothes/supplies, I end up behind and have no means to make up for it.

My question is, am I responsible for half the debt having been a stay at home mom for so many years and due to the trouble I am having finding a FT job? This is a terrible time to be looking...I have a college degree from a UC school and can not even get an interview in most circumstances.
