Ending Child Support - My "unique" situation

Hi there. I put "unique" in quotes because I'm not sure just how unique this is, but here goes:
My son lives with his mother in northern California. I am currently paying child support through an automatic deduction from my employer's payroll. My questions are: 1) when does child support stop, and 2) is it automatic or something I have to initiate (and with whom, the court, office of Child Support, etc...)?
Here are the details...
* My son will be 18 in March
* However, he will NOT be graduating on time, he has to repeat at least half of his senior year
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
