I consider myself lucky that my daughter DOES recognize I'm the parent who "does" for her. I have also PUSHED the relationship with her father, particularly when exSO and I split, she was ready to ditch her father if that would bring exSO back and I really really hammered the "your DAD IS YOUR DAD!!!!! PERIOD!!!!" message. Apparently, it got through :) Which is GREAT!

I think kids pick up a TON from the adults around them. I consider myself very lucky that even in my social circle, where my situation is VERY unusual (they're all marrieds, together happy families really) and the long distance thing is weird to them, my daughter has no trouble mentioning her dad, or her sister.. even relative to the travel, when she's going to see them (like there may be a party being discussed and she can't go), and my circle is "gung ho" dad.. "that's great! that'll be so much fun!, it's it great you get to see your dad!" That kind of thing. They've never laid eyes on him, and they know the backstory to a large extent so they know he's not dad of the year but they have incredibly healthy attitudes and are just genuinely nice, caring people. I think my daughter has thrived, and developed her own very healthy attitude, by being surrounded by all that.

I suspect that SRS's kids pick up on her negativity.. which is only going to make dad like more like superguy and will make her look like a wench in their eyes ultimately, would be my GUESS. Again, just a guess.. but I think it's a pretty good one.
