Generically, I agree with this 100%!! In fact, that was the opinion of both my ex and I when we split with my son.

I wonder if people would just stop expecting Stepmom's(and Step dad's) to be "Mom"(and "Dad", respectively) because the step child's parent is a lousy one, or has passed away etc...maybe some of these issues could be put to rest.

My dad died early in my life. *I* (at 6 yrs old) understood my Dad was gone. My stepdad was NOT him and I didn't expect nor want him to be. His role in my life was different than my Dad's...period.

Too many step parents WANT to have the role of parent to a step child regardless of the bio parents situation. How about we all just stop that and be what we are...step parents.

Again, I am sure it won't work in every situation, but it sure hellped me keep things inperspective when I was a kid. Do things with your own kids, step daddy, because that's what they are. I will do things with my Mom that your kids won't do, because that's the way it is. I never felt slighted or belittled or worthless...cause that was their parent and mine was mine. As for house rules...they were consistant.
