I will agree, but in a household there is only so much one can do. Then, there comes an aspect of personal responsibility that has to kick in.
You do what you can do to protect yourself. As an adult, I ensure that the house is locked when I'm not home and when we're asleep. I ensure that the alarm is set, my car is secured, my purse is locked away when I'm at work, my car is locked and the alarm set to protect it and the belongings inside.
If I leave my car unlocked and leave my purse on the front seat, a hundred dollars of CDs on the visor, a $100 GPS and my $400 cell phone charging, I did FAIL if someone simply opens the door and takes the stuff. In that instance, there WAS something that I could have done to impede the theft.
Same thing here. If there's a method put in place to protect the 17yo's belongings (the lock) and she chooses not to use it, she isn't doing her diligence. Does that suck? Yup. But, it's kinda like the lesson my kid learned when she left her favorite hoodie in Spanish class. It was taken. She didn't do HER diligence of taking the hoodie with her, and had to deal with those consequences.
