My family usually comes to me for advice on the the laws of CS and custody, however in my jurisdiction if you want a judge to pay any attention to you- you want a lawyer. They will continually ask you if you want one, even if you say no the first time.

Just as M5 stated attorney told us what the $500 would cover... One of the first times in court we paid $500 to take care of the court appearance and a bunch of paperwork. That's all it took was that ONE time in court and the order was established.

This last time around our attorneys ended up in court twice. Once for a lawyers conference which was ridiculous because they couldn't come to an agreement. The second time was when the order was established. Most of the lawyer's hours were burnt talking back and forth with her lawyer- which I think was a play to burn $$$ since she kept giving a number and then changing it. For us it didn't matter since we had money to still burn, we put down a deposit for the termination of CS on our end, which cost less than anticipated.
