..from a theological scholar

---> And your point would be.........what? There are theological scholar who would disagree and/or have their theories...so who is right and who is wrong?

---> But I've got some time to waste, so let's take a look at what Pagels says:

1. That the "writer of Revelation was actually describing the way his own world ended" and that he was "trying to encourage the followers of Jesus at a time when their world seemed doomed"; she also says that he was "a devout Jew and mystic".

I would agree that the Siege of Jerusalem might seem like the 'end of world' as would being exiled, but seriously...that's some pretty big poetic license on imagery don't you think? Probably why it's glossed over. Just like admitting that he's a mystic and glossing over the first three verses.

Then there is the contradiction of a devout Jew encouraging the belief of the return of Christ. Devout Jews don't believe that Jesus was the Son of God...period.

2. That "the author of Revelation couldn’t safely name Nero, so he used the Jewish numerology system to spell out Nero’s imperial name". This is understandable when you consider a) the text of Revelations 13:17 ("the number of his name") and b) that Nero exiled the author of Revelations, but when you add in other factors, it simply doesn't track.

To start with, in Gematria (Jewish numerology), the Mispar gadol (values table) uses 1 through 9, 10 through 90 and 100 through 400...so how do you translate "Six hundred threescore and six" (aka '666') if you don't have a value for 600? It is Preterist theologians who support the whole '666 means Nero', but they also believe that Revelations was prophesy, that it what written BEFORE the Siege of Jerusalem. But Pagels says that Revelations was written AFTER the Siege, and alludes that that it is based on his experiences thereof. Which brings up two more points; a) how could he have experienced the Siege if he was in exile and b) Nero died two years before the Siege.

And for someone who is supposed to be such an 'expert', what about the Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus? That it's NOT '666', but '616'?

3. That "author of Revelation hated Rome, but he also scorned another group – a group of people we would call Christians today". Uh uh...this is the same author that Pagels earlier claimed "was trying to encourage the followers of Jesus at a time when their world seemed doomed"?!?

4. The ONLY thing that I can agree 100% with Pagels: "Early church leaders suppressed an “astonishing” range of books".
