custody in CA

I am currently facing the probability of divorce. My wife moved out in August. Since then I have been the primary provider of care for our 2 small children (they have been staying with me twice as much as with her). Before she left she was a stay at home Mom. I would like to get majority custody of the kids. She just doesn't seem to want them as much or to be making them a priority right now. We initially agreed to a 50/50 schedule, but she just isn't holding up her end of the bargain. I have been to see a couple of attorneys and have been told I have a good chance of gaining majority custody. I have also been told by a friend, that has been through the process, that there is no way a judge in CA will grant me the majority of the custody. Especially because up until our seperation she was a stay at home Mom. He suggests that I proceed with the divorce asking for 50/50, and if she continues to not hold up her end then go back to court and try for more custody. He believes that lawyers will tell you anything to get your cash. Are the attorneys stroking me, or is my friend misinformed? I really don't want this divorce to get ugly, which it will if I try for more than 50/50 custody, but I need to protect my kids.
