This forum seems to be dedicated to what goes wrong with step-parenting. I thought I would share a story about what went right for a change.
It was our weekend with all the kids (5 of them). We started off as usual. "Usual" is the war of the families. My hubby and I gave each other a look that said neither one of us could deal with a whole weekend of bickering. After my son (7) and his daughter (7) got into a wrestling match over our two y/o's toy (which neither of them really wanted to play with), we decided we had to get the heck out of the house before it fell down around us.
Like every other family in the world, all of our bills are due on the 1st of the month, so funds were kind of low for our outing. We ended up at the park (free) instead of at an arcade (costly with five kids). We had a perfect day together.
We started out by playing "Mother may I?". My hubby just watched at first, but soon joined in the game. My 12 y/o was the "mother" and decided she would make him do a somersault (which he very clumsily did). She got a good laugh at his expense. Next time it was his turn, he had to skip and sing "La, La, La, La" and he did this one, too. Way to funny considering my hubby is 6'5" and weighs 280# and he is what you would consider a "manly man". After he did his skipping, he noticed a table full of what appeared to be w/e dads laughing their asses off at him.
Next, we went to climb the fire tower. I am petrified of heights and so is my stepdaughter, so we decided to watch the others. She bet me that I couldn't make it to the 5th flight w/out chickening out. I told her I would take that bet, but she had to come with me. Off we went! Both of us was pretty scared once we reached the fifth flight (not even 1/2 way), but we made it that far and decided to go another flight. Before we knew it, we were at the top! It was windy and the tower was swaying, but we MADE it.
I guess where I am going with this is that you can't have a rainbow with the rain. My family has been through some really rocky times, but I am finally starting to see the pot of gold.
I hope that this makes someone smile!!!!
P.S. It will also be very hard to stay mad at him if I have the visual of him skipping and doing somersaults.
