alimony after ten years

have a friend married 8.5 years. She has no crisis in her marriage but wants out. Her husband is very successful and the potential settlement is large--he became successful largely after their marriage.
My lawyer told her that if she sticks it out to 10 years her likelihood of getting permanent alimony and a more generous settlement greatly increases.
She has decided to wait, and is using this time to gently start taking an interest in the finances and learning where all the assets are. If she filed now she have problems with that.
