Concerns for the Future & Our Rights
      05/09/07 07:52 PM

My daughter is now going through a divorce in Missouri. Due to circumstances too long to enumerate here (it would take a book) she most likely will have physical custody of the children. The son-in-law (European) is not a US citizen but has a Green Card making him a resident alien. He has chosen to take his vindictiveness and bitterness out on me in particular verbally at my daughter. Even has told her that if he ever sees me driving down the road in their town he will pull me over (he's not law enforcement), drag me out of the car and "deck" me. ( He has all the traits of the long list given for abusers !!) I live in the Northwest and most likely will not go back to MO for some time - at least till this divorce is settled. We just returned late Feb from an extended stay there - staying weeks longer because we were & still are concerned for the safety of my daughter & the children. I know that I can go anywhere I want in these United States but still have concerns regarding the long term rights as grandparents. I know deep in my heart that if something should ever happen to my daughter, her soon to be ex, would never let us see the grandchildren. He is that hateful although we are extremely close to the 8 year old and have bonded beautifully with the 2 year old. My daughter wants to cover potential circumstances regarding our rights to see the children in the parenting plan she is submitting. Unfortunately, we know that if given the opportunity, the father would take the children out of the country and back to Holland if my daughter should decease. In the current plan to be submitted if he wishes to take the children out of the country he has to show proof of purchased airline tickets with return dates as well. She has the passports until travel arrangements are approved and then both parties must sign before travel agreeing to the arrangement. We are still not convinced that this is the best option and that he could take them out of the US and never return. ( Can you spell Weazel with a capital "W"? ) We need to be assured that we will be able to see our grandchildren. Anyone else had a similar experience? We would like some input.
