Morbid Question

My husband's former co pilot was killed in a helicopter crash last fall in Iraq. His wife has now moved down the street from us and we were chatting about the new tax rebates, and filing taxes, etc. What status would she file this year? She is still really shaken up (as anyone would be) and she has put things like bills and taxes on the back burner.

Also is his life insurance taxed additionally as income?

Sorry, if I am not making sense, this kind of hits home with me as my husband is in the Middle East now.
