Yard help!
      06/24/08 04:00 PM

Okay, so I am trying to calculate how much rock/mulch we need to landscape our yard. Our landlord is paying for everything and we are doing the labor, so I really don't want to order more than we need, kwim?

Anyway, our front yard is xeroscaped, and the backyard was formerly garden around the edges, and we are xeroscaping that part. We love on a standard corner-lot sized area. By my calculations, we need nearly 40 tons of rock, ten tons of mulch, and another 2 tons of an accent rock. Doesn't this seem like a LOT of rock? I was really surprised by the 40 tons!!! Isn't that like a semi-full? Anyone familiar with this?

I measured with the kids, and they hollered everything off in inches...I divided each measurement by 12 to get feet, and then did basic L x W and then added each total together for the various areas. Did I do the calculations correctly?

Also, the BULK of that is to re-rock the front yard...our side yard and back yard are the only areas where there isn't already rock, but in places out front it is down to the dirt. So I am wondering if, for the front yard, their 2-3 inches depth to get the 100 sq feet per ton is over what we are going to need.

Quite honestly, I figured this would be easy, but it just seems like I came up with way too much material!! I mean, our house is 1800 sq feet on each floor, and we could set our house twice in the front yard, but then there is a huge shrubbery row with boulders underneath, and another area with bushes and rock; we are just doing the in-between areas that were red rocked.

If it helps visualize...our house faces one street and the driveway is off the side street. it is rock from the driveway forward to the street, and the front yard looks similar to a half-circle drive. You could drive straight through it, with the hedges on the outside of the circle and the inside of the circle.

So, do my estimates seem off? I have pics, but not with me...I don't think. Iwill have to check.
