Filing status - Joint Married versus Single

My wife and I have different last names and we have filed joint married returns for several years.

However, I plan to file single returns this year even though we aren't divorced.

How would the IRS or New York State tax agencies know of my marital status?

All assets that we own are in our own names including bank accounts.

I realize you're not giving me tax advice but would appreciate your comments regarding my question.

My rationale for this is the Federal government bailout of the Wall Street crooks!
